Curtis Eyres had another good game and must be contender for Player of the Season

With a backlog of games ‘Ceux found themselves with a midweek fixture against a tough Robertsbridge side who ended our 5 game unbeaten run earlier in the season. Today though was a different game!

Herstmonceux came into the game having ended their losing streak the previous Saturday after a battling 2-2 draw against West Hill. They were looking to come into this match and take all 3 points.

The Manager had some difficult choices to make with almost all the squad available. His chosen line up was:

Gk Mathew Akehurst Lb Fraser Lewis Cb Waylon Smith Cb Tom Crouch

Rb Ollie Brooks Rm mark Stillwell Lm Toby Funnell Cm Curtis Eyres

Cm Lewis Harper St David Russell St Dan Gregory

With Ashley Mutter Harry Glenister and Ryan Arnott on the bench

So the game started and ceux looked fired up from the off, seeing lots of the ball as Robertsbridge backed off. We kept the ball on the deck and played simple football, breaking down the Robertsbridge team time and time again. The first clear cut chance being a cross from Ollie brooks inch perfect into David ‘ginger ninja’ Russell who pulled the trigger with his first shot of the game but saw it blaze over the bar. ‘Ceux didn’t get frustrated however and they settled down and went again not letting Robertsbridge back in the game.

Dan Gregory was a tower of strength up front

The two central midfielders Lewis Harper and Curtis Eyres werer working hard in the heat to back the defence up and break things down, and 6 mins later after some beautiful one touch passing down the right hand side, Curtis Eyres picked up the ball and sent a beautiful ball over the top of the defence to David Russell who plucked it on his chest and slotted it into the bottom left corner for 1-0. ‘Ceux were fired up and were not going to let it slip, managing the game for the next 5 mins. Waylon Smith took charge tightening up the back line and settling them down. Lewis Harper in the midfield did the same: sitting just in front and allowing Curtis Eyres to be the playmaker. ‘Ceux continued to create chances but came in at half time with a well deserved 1-0 lead.

With the light going it was a quick turn around and Robertsbridge came out firing having 4 corners in the first 10 mins of the second half and this is where Matt Akehurst showed his true class. A header was fired towards goal in the opposite direction to where Akehurst was moving, but he leapt like a Gazelle, and not only saved it but palmed it out of the way to be cleared by a ‘Ceux defender. This wasn’t his only save. He also made several crucial ones on one, leaving forwards pole-axed as if they had been hit by a truck. His distribution was quality sending the strikers on their way from every goal kick, and his judgement also meant that Herstmonceux were able to hold the opposition at the edge of the box knowing that he would pick off anything from range.

Dave Russell struck his 4th goal of the season and is closing in on Stillwell and Eyres

It was to turn into a slugfest for the last 15 as a tired battling ‘Ceux fought hard. All three subs made gave them a lift and we dug our feet in and battled on not giving anything as Robertsbridge through everything, including the kitchen sink at the ceux. Even their goalkeeper made forays into the home half, but it wasn’t good enough and with sterling performances from each individual player ‘Ceux saw the game out and walked away with the 3 points!!!

Manager Jack Tutty would like to thank each and every one of his players for giving everything and more last night and just wants to say UPTHECEUX and bring on Wittersham Saturday!!

Mom goes to debutee captain Matt Akehurst for a magnificent performance and for leading from the back.

Well done boys.

Afterword: With Wittersham not able to field a side on Saturday, Herstmonceux now have 25 points and sit joint 5th: level on points with Robertsbridge. A very respectable position.
